JCC Scholarships

The JCC provides multiple yearly scholarships to military dependents and spouses, veterans, and DoD workers on JBER for undergraduate, and continuing education.

The application for the 2024-2025 School Year Scholarships is now available!

Scholarship Application Packets are due by March 31 each year for the following school year.

Purpose

The JBER Community Club (JCC) Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to deserving applicants to further their education at an accredited educational institution. The JCC awards these scholarships on the basis of community service, personal achievements, academic achievements, references, and a submitted essay. A scholarship award may be used only for the payment of tuition, books, course supplies, or school fees (to include room and board).

Scholarship Award Categories

Scholarships will be awarded in the following categories:
1. Graduating High School Senior (Graduates of the current school year)

2. Adult Continuing Education (Undergraduate, graduate, and trade/vocational)

3. JBER CYP Employee (See more information below)

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must be a graduating high school senior or have a high school or equivalent diploma with plans to attend further education classes within the next school year. Applicant must be a family member possessing a valid military identification card who is the son/daughter/spouse of:

a. An Active-Duty Military Service Member who is assigned to Joint Base

    Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER).

b. An Active Guard or Reserve Component Service Member assigned to a unit on

    Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER).
c. A Department of the Army or Department of Defense civilian employed at Joint
    Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER).
d. A Retired Military Service Member residing in the Municipality of Anchorage
    or the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
e. A dependent of a deceased military member.

JBER CYP Scholarship

Completed Application Packets are due by March 31 of each year.

For the first time, JBER Community Club has created a separate competitive category and is awarding a continuing education scholarship to a JBER CYP employee. On-base child and youth programs employees will be graded in their own category without competition from military dependents.

You will still fill out the same application and provide the same additional required documents listed as part of the application process and below on this webpage for reference. 

Scholarship Committee Selection Process

Completed Application Packets are due by March 31 of each year.

The Scholarship Selection Committee determines the number of scholarships and their value in relation to funds available for disbursement. Each application packet will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. The committee is made up of committee members that are part of the JBER and education community. All of the components in the application packet are scored based on a numerical scale. Areas of assessment include:

  1. Weighted GPA

  2. Essay

  3. Reference Letters

  4. Activities, non-academic achievements, community service, and academic achievements

  5. 5 points will be awarded if the application is a member of the JBER Community Club or the spouse/son/daughter of a JCC member.

The committee reviews each application and awards scholarships anonymously. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, religion, sex, age, color, martial status, lawful political affiliation, labor organization membership, or physical handicaps. All decisions made by the Selection Committee are final.

Scholarship recipients will be notified of selection by the JCC Scholarship Chair by email no later than May 1. At this time the Scholarship Recipients will be required to complete a Scholarship Disbursement Form that must be returned to the JCC Scholarship Chair by May 15. 

If awarded, the students must show proof of military affiliation (in form of a Military ID card) and proof of enrollment at an institution of higher learning. The scholarship funds are awarded directly to the student after enrollment in a secondary education institution or trade school has been verified. Instructions on verification will be provided to the award recipients. The Scholarship Awards Ceremony will be held in May with further details released at a later date.

How To Apply

The application is now available. Click below to apply! Once the application is filled out and submitted through JCC's website, you may refer to this page again for the additional required documents to complete the application packet. 

Additional Required Documents

In addition to filling out the scholarship application there are four (4) documents that are required to be emailed to the JCC Scholarship Chair, without these documents your application packet will be considered incomplete and will impact the final score when the application packets are reviewed by the selection committee. Scans, PDF, or photos of these documents will be accepted as long as they are legible and the whole page is visible.

  1. Transcript from your current or most recent school. This will be either your high school, college, university, trade/vocational school, or other accredited school. 

  2. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation.​​

  3. Typed Essay answering the below prompt.

Letters of Recommendation

To the applicant: The writer should be someone you trust such as a college faculty member, a coach, a club advisor, or an employment/volunteer supervisor.

​

To the writer: Please be honest and realistic in your evaluation of the candidate. You should include comments on initiative, attitude, integrity, character, and academic achievement. Include any other information you feel pertinent. To ensure fairness in judging, we preserve the anonymity of the applicant during the selection process. **Therefore, please do NOT use the applicant's name in your narrative, instead use the word applicant. The letter MUST be hand signed by the writer.

You may submit it directly to the JCC Scholarship Chair or the student may submit it, however if the document appears to be forged in any manner it will be removed from the packet and will impact the final score.

Essay

The essay must be 1-2 pages typed in black font, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point font. Make sure you essay is clearly labeled, bot does NOT contain your name.

 

Essay Topic: If you were an an animal, what animal would it be and why?
